10 facts you may not have known about orphaned children in Peru.

1. More than 570,000 orphans roam the streets of Peru with nowhere to go and no one to help them.

2. 17,000 children have been orphaned by AIDS.

3. 66% or 6.5 million of all children in PerĂº live in poverty.

4. 50,000 children are at-risk due to child labor, sexual exploitation, and teen pregnancy among other issues.

5. There are 33 government orphanages in PerĂº.

6. Over 10,000 street children live in Lima and the number is growing.

7.  54% of the population below the poverty line, and high birth rates have led to a large number of street orphans and abandoned children in Peru.

8. 20% are living on less than $1 per day.

9. Approximately 11% of Peru’s children will die before they reach the age of five.

10. Almost 20% of the children are forced to work as child laborers to help their family survive.
